The I-TERAPI project addresses the unmet needs of the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector by bringing a highly innovative

technology that will be a real game changer in the development and manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).

As a matter of fact, the pharmaceutical market that manufactures almost $200bn of APIs annually, is ridden with inefficiencies. A very

stark example are the processes of filtration, purification and drying of APIs. These are key drug manufacturing processes and yet,

they follow obsolete gold standards based on manual processes and human subjective interventions. This leads to high costs of

development and manufacturing of drugs, lengthy time-to-market for new drugs and extensive environmental pollution.

The I-TERAPI project is designed to target the evolution of the obsolete gold standards by incorporating artificial intelligence deep into the

filtration, purification and drying processes of APIs. It is the first technology in the world that is able to predict the behaviour of

APIs during these key manufacturing processes and consequently reduce, by >99%, manual testing activities (R&D, manufacturing)

and guarantee “always-optimal” manufacturing processes. This will result in significant benefits for pharma companies (lower costs

and higher revenues) and a boost to environmental sustainability (reduction of chemical waste, GHG emissions and energy

consumption) and to societal sustainability (lower time-to-market for new drugs, lower prices and higher availability of drugs).

I-TERAPI technology reached TRL7 level today and the technology is expected to complete TRL7 and TRL8 by the end of the project. With the completion of the I-TERAPI project, a very distant dream of the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector will become a reality and EC will gain a significant contributor to achieving EU goals and objectives for pharmaceutical industry.
