Abstract: Science has emerged as one of the most influential forces shaping economic growth, social transformation and national progress in the twenty-first century. The development of modern societies is increasingly dependent on the ability to create scientific knowledge, translate that knowledge into technological innovations and ensure that these innovations reach different sections of society. For a country such as India, which is simultaneously addressing issues of economic development, population growth, employment, education, healthcare, agriculture, energy security and environmental sustainability, science has a particularly important role to play. Scientific advancement can provide evidence-based and innovative solutions to complex national challenges while also strengthening India's competitiveness in the global knowledge economy. The vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 represents India's aspiration to become a developed nation by the centenary of independence. This vision encompasses not merely higher economic growth but also improvements in human development, education, healthcare, infrastructure, employment, social equity, technological capability, environmental sustainability and quality of life. Science and technology can serve as connecting forces among these different dimensions of development. Advances in agricultural science can improve productivity and climate resilience; medical science can support affordable healthcare; digital technologies can improve access to public services and education; space science can support communication, navigation and disaster management; renewable-energy research can strengthen energy security; and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics and quantum technologies can create new opportunities for innovation and economic growth. The present paper examines the multidimensional importance of science in India's development with particular reference to Viksit Bharat @2047. It adopts a descriptive and analytical approach based on secondary information obtained from policy documents, government reports, scientific institutions, educational literature and international development reports. The paper discusses the contribution of science to economic development, agriculture, healthcare, education, industry, digital transformation, space technology, renewable energy and environmental sustainability. It further explores the role of scientific education in developing curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving ability and innovation among young people. The paper also identifies significant challenges, including unequal access to scientific resources, the digital divide, inadequate research infrastructure in some areas, limited industry-academia collaboration, shortage of specialised human resources, brain drain and the gap between scientific research and its practical application. The paper argues that the achievement of Viksit Bharat @2047 requires a transition from a technology-consuming society to a knowledge-generating and innovation-driven society.
