Abstract Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) has significantly influenced students' approach to formal writing. The present research, titled “Impact of Generative AI on the Formal Writing Practices of Undergraduate Students,” tries to examine the extent, frequency, purposes, and perceived effects of Generative AI used by undergraduate students in formal writing. A descriptive survey research design along with a quantitative approach was applied. A structured online questionnaire was prepared using Google Forms to collect primary data from undergraduate students representing programmes such as B.A., BMS, BAF, B.Com., B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. IT, Psychology, History, and B.A.M.M.C. A total of 108 responses were obtained. Non-probability convenience sampling was used, and responses were analysed on the basis of frequency and percentage analysis, along with interpretation of Likert-scale responses. The findings show that a considerable number of undergraduate students use Generative AI in formal writing practices, which is clear as 94 out of 108 respondents (86.9%) selecting previous use of Generative AI for formal writing. ChatGPT proved to be the most popular Generative AI tool used by the students, followed by Google Gemini and Claude. The study reveals students’ use of AI for generating ideas, drafting content, improving grammar and language, summarising information, and editing written work. This study is aimed at finding out the degree of AI help in formal writing, the level of students' improvement in their writing skills, confidence in writing without AI help, acceptance of AI-written content without major editing, and their readiness to keep using the tools. This study reveals the significance of Generative AI in the field of formal writing of undergraduates and the advantages, as well as possible drawbacks, connected to their dependence on the technology. These results can be helpful in studying the influence of Generative AI on the writing process of students and will help the educational institutions and teachers to encourage proper and ethical use of Generative AI by students.
