The transition to cleaner energy sources faces significant challenges, particularly in the hydropower sector, where reliance on variable environmental factors often leads to substantial forecasting errors – often exceeding 30%. These errors contribute to an estimated €10 billion in annual revenue losses globally. Wegaw SA addresses these challenges with HydroSuite, an innovative AI-driven solution that leverages remotely sensed satellite data to provide near real-time insights into critical environmental variables, achieving optimum accuracy at a 30m resolution. This technology reduces reliance on outdated historical data and costly fieldwork, enabling hydropower utilities to optimize production and cut operational expenses by up to 50%.
Founded in 2016 by CEO Ion Padilla, Wegaw’s mission is to accelerate the clean energy transition by enhancing the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy forecasting.
This EIC Accelerator project seeks support for the further development and commercialization of HydroSuite, combining grants and patient equity to ensure that development timelines are met without significant equity dilution. With successful pilots already validated by major utilities and recognized by organizations such as the European Space Agency, Wegaw is poised to transform hydropower forecasting and contribute to the EU’s target of achieving at least 42.5% renewable energy consumption by 2030. Supported by the EIC, Wegaw will solidify its position as a leader in the renewable energy sector, driving the global transition to a more sustainable and efficient energy future.
