Lesson planning is a central professional task for teachers. In the current rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, this study, situated within the Austrian education context, aims to explore the current state of AI application in lesson planning practices, the potential and obstacles that the integration may bring, as well as the current status of teacher education and training in preparing teachers for these emerging technologies. This qualitative study is based on four semi-structured interviews with teacher education and teacher training experts within the field of AI in higher education institutions. A thematic analysis was employed, which revealed moderate levels of AI application, dependent on variables like school type and subject, accompanied by a wide range of teacher attitudes and reasons for reluctance. The perceived potential primarily relates to workload reduction, differentiation, enhanced creativity, and possibilities in material creation, whereas the obstacles mainly concern limited structural conditions such as insufficient resources and frameworks, as well as the unsatisfactory quality of AI applications and their limited adaptation to the Austrian educational context. Concerning teacher education, the findings point to a high level of interest and a wide range of teacher training offers; however, a gap in translating theory into practice is notable. The findings of this study contribute to existing research by providing insights into possible reasons for this gap as well as hinting at necessary implications to allow the successful realization of the potential of AI implementation in lesson planning. Suggestions for future research in the field complete the study.
