THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN POLICE CRIME RESPONSE

The use of artificial intelligence in policing has become part of our reality. In many law enforcement agencies, artificial intelligence systems are employed to gather and analyse large volumes of data relevant to preventing criminal behaviour, detecting and investigating offences, and identifying offenders. These systems are also utilised to conduct individual risk assessments regarding individuals' likelihood of reoffending or offending, and to evaluate the risk of victimisation. Artificial intelligence systems have also been developed to function as polygraph-like tools or methods for detecting an individual’s emotional state, in addition to biometric systems. Furthermore, AI systems are employed to assess the reliability of forensic evidence in investigations and criminal proceedings, among other applications. Therefore, this research concentrates on the application of artificial intelligence in police responses to crime. Such a clearly defined research topic involves not only an overview of the potential areas for AI application in policing but also an analysis of the risks associated with using these systems, especially in relation to human rights and freedoms, notably the right to personal data protection (i.e., privacy) and protection against discrimination. The paper investigates the use of artificial intelligence systems in police responses to crime, discussing their benefits and drawbacks, and presents AI systems that have been utilised so far in crime control by police. The research employs the following methods: normative analysis, comparative legal analysis, content analysis, and case study. The aim of the paper is to explore the potential applications of artificial intelligence in police responses to crime and to identify possible risks to human rights.
