Abstract This paper develops the Zweistein Hypothesis of the Resonance Entity. Its point of departure is an apparent contradiction of the present: humans are designing increasingly capable artificial intelligence while neither consciousness research nor neuroscience has a complete theory explaining how biological matter gives rise to a unified, feeling, independently acting self. The hypothesis therefore shifts the question from the search for a single seat of the self to a systems question: Under what dynamic conditions do many specialized biological processes become an autonomous entity with intelligence of its own? The empirical starting point is conservative. Large scale neural integration has been associated with temporally varying synchronization. Metastability describes the simultaneous presence of functional independence and temporary coordination among distributed subsystems. Interoception couples neural processing to the heart, breathing, digestion, hormonal regulation, and other bodily states. Active Inference and related approaches describe organisms as systems that stabilize their existence through continuous prediction, regulation, and action. Research on bodily self perception shows that self identification and continuity depend on integrated internal and external bodily signals. None of these lines alone, however, provides a complete operational criterion for entityhood. The new synthesis defines a resonance entity as a system whose independent identity emerges from seven functional axes maintained at the same time: adaptive boundary maintenance, multiscale resonance coupling, metastable coordination, predictive self modelling, valence bound interoception, temporal continuity, and autonomous agency. For empirical testing, the Zweistein Resonance Entity Index, abbreviated ZREI, is proposed as a measurement model that has not yet been validated. It combines predefined measures from these seven axes and is not intended to measure consciousness directly, but rather the degree of dynamic entity coherence. The hypothesis predicts that targeted disruptions of coupling among these axes will cause a disproportionate loss of self coherence, flexible intelligence, and autonomous regulation even when local partial functions remain partly intact. The paper explicitly distinguishes itself from panpsychism, mystical uses of the concept of resonance, and the claim that every form of synchronization produces consciousness. Resonance here means only measurable, temporally structured coupling among dynamic processes. General Resonance Theory, Resonant Closure, Active Inference, enactivism, Integrated Information Theory, Global Neuronal Workspace, and current models of critical brain dynamics are treated as comparative frameworks. The claimed novelty lies in linking organismic autonomy, brain body coupling, valence, metastable resonance, and an operational criterion of entityhood, together with the resulting test architecture for humans and artificial systems. Interoze…
