As artificial intelligence (AI) systems play an increasingly significant role in decision-making across domains like credit assessment, recruitment and healthcare, concerns about their transparency and accountability are becoming more pressing.This text examines the legal notion of a right to explanation.It analyzes the recognition of this right within the framework of European Union law, particularly under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Consumer Credit Directive, and the AI Act, and explores whether this right may also be grounded in broader fundamental rights.The analysis addresses both technical and legal strategies for tackling the challenge of AI opacity, with a particular focus on the concept of local explanations, which clarify individual decisions rather than the overall system logic.Using the example of credit scoring, the text illustrates how personalized explanations can enhance transparency and empower those affected by automated decisions.
