Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant for pastoral caregivers - both as a tool in their work and in simulated pastoral care encounters between humans and technology. Based on the current state of research on AI and pastoral care/spiritual care, six emerging lines of tension and fields of discourse are identified. A context-sensitive, empirically grounded, and critically reflective engagement is advocated - one that moves beyond blanket positions of approval or rejection.
