Abstract The growing complexity of engineering and construction projects has revealed the weaknesses of conventional project planning, scheduling, and control approaches. Traditional tools often employ fixed assumptions, deterministic models, and past averages, which are inadequate for dealing with uncertainty, dynamic environments, and large-scale data. Artificial intelligence has become a disruptive technology that can be used to improve decision-making, prediction, and automation in project management processes. This paper examines the application of artificial intelligence in project planning, scheduling, and control within the engineering and construction sector. The paper summarises the application of artificial intelligence methods, including machine learning, optimization algorithms, and predictive analytics, in enhancing project performance using a methodical review of the recent scholarly literature and industry practise. The results show that artificial intelligence promotes the planning accuracy, flexibility of scheduling, and real-time project control to a great extent, as it allows data-driven insights and flexible responses. Issues of data quality, company preparedness, and ethical issues are major obstacles to implementation. The research paper adds to the project management literature because it develops the application of artificial intelligence in the three fundamental project management functions and provides practical advice to practitioners interested in introducing intelligent project management systems.
