From Dependence To Independence: Work, Economy, And The Changing Future Of Work In English Literature With Special Reference To Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Elizabeth Gaskell's North And South And Virginia Woolf's A Room Of One's Own

Literature is a mirror of society. It shows the economic conditions, social problems, and daily struggles of human life across different times. Work is one of the most important parts of human life. In the past, many people depended completely on land, rich masters, or family heads for their survival. Over time, the meaning of work has changed from total dependence to economic independence. English literature presents many stories of characters who fight against poverty and social rules to earn their own living and live with dignity. Work is not just a way to earn money; it also gives a person self-respect, identity, and personal freedom. This research paper examines how work, economy, and independence are presented in selected English literary texts: Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South, and Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own. These texts show how education, employment, and money help individuals to become free and confident. Finally, this paper connects these literary lessons with the modern world. Today, technology, artificial intelligence, online platforms, and work-from-home jobs are changing the future of work. The paper concludes that even in the modern digital age, human dignity and economic security are essential for true freedom.
