Abstract: Although livestock production methods have a significant negative impact on the environment, they are essential to rural livelihoods, economic growth, and global food security. The environmental effects of livestock systems and mitigation techniques are summarized in this review, with particular attention paid to greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, water pollution, biodiversity loss, and antibiotic resistance. While pig and poultry farms produce large volumes of ammonia and nutrient-rich effluents that damage water resources, ruminant animals like cattle and buffalo are important contributors to methane emissions through enteric fermentation. Whereas vast pastoral systems frequently cause overgrazing and desertification in delicate ecosystems, intensive systems hasten land-use change for feed crop cultivation, causing soil erosion and forest fragmentation. Anaerobic digestion, precision feeding, low emission diets, and biogas recovery are examples of technological treatments that have shown promise in reducing environmental footprints. The conservation of native breeds and genetic development initiatives aimed at improving feed efficiency and methane-reducing characteristics provide complimentary approaches. Real-time monitoring and emission reduction at the farm level are made possible by the combination of artificial intelligence (AI), microbiome engineering, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The adoption of climate-smart livestock practices is influenced by socioeconomic factors such market-driven sustainability, gender dynamics, and livelihood dependency. High technology costs, a dearth of emission data, institutional fragmentation, and smallholders' behavioral resistance are some of the difficulties. Adaptive solutions in line with ecological integrity and productivity are offered by climate resilient infrastructure and silvopastoral systems.
