Abstract India’s digital transformation is creating a growing need for intelligent systems that can operate reliably across diverse sectors and linguistic settings. This paper presents a conceptual review of the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI), mathematics, and India’s digital development. The discussion focuses on agriculture, education, banking and financial services, legal services, transportation, digital commerce, and industry. Particular attention is given to the mathematical ideas that underpin AI: linear algebra for representing data and parameters; probability and statistics for uncertainty and inference; calculus for gradient-based learning; and optimization for selecting model parameters and making decisions. Mathematical modelling is further considered as a bridge between real-world systems and data-driven methods. The paper also examines responsible and inclusive AI, emphasizing reliability, privacy, fairness, transparency, security, accountability, and human oversight. India’s national AI strategy and the India’s AI Mission provide a policy context for these developments, while recent international assessment work highlights the importance of human-centred and ethical deployment. The paper argues that India’s long-term AI capacity should be developed through a coordinated emphasis on computing infrastructure, high-quality data, mathematical education, interdisciplinary research, multilingual technologies, and responsible governance.
