Bezmienov and Lem. Ideological Diversion in the Era of Algorithms and LLMs

This article examines the relevance of Yuri Bezmenov's theory of ideological diversion in the context of the contemporary information ecosystem dominated by social media and Large Language Models (LLMs), and presents scenarios for its evolution over the next 5-10 years. The paper posits that Bezmienov's four-stage model (demoralisation, destabilisation, crisis, normalisation), although developed during the Cold War, remains an extremely accurate tool for describing and analysing modern disinformation operations and forecasting their future forms. The article presents Bezmienov's original theory and Stanisław Lem's visions of the "information flood" and the "technological trap" as complementary perspectives – a practitioner and a philosopher who, from different positions, described the same fundamental threats. However, it should be noted that Bezmienov's model is not without limitations. First, it was formulated in a specific Cold War context and did not fully account for the complexity of contemporary, multi-actor information environments. Second, its four-stage sequence is ideal-typical – in practice, stages may overlap, proceed in parallel, or take a different order. Third, the very category of 'useful idiots' has been criticised for oversimplifying the motivations of social actors. Despite these reservations, the model retains high heuristic value. Based on current research and case studies, the analysis explores how social media and LLMs not only implement but also automate and intensify the processes described by Bezmienov. In the existing literature, the issue of the impact of generative artificial intelligence on disinformation processes has been analysed inter alia in works on malicious AI, which indicate the possibility of deliberately designing LLM systems to conduct influence operations. Despite the growing number of publications in this area, there is still a lack of systematic analyses linking classical theory of ideological diversion with new technological capabilities – this gap the present article seeks to fill. The second part of the article presents five scenarios for the development of ideological diversion up to 2035, from the "Autonomous Propaganda Factory" to "Total Cognitive War," considering progress in the fields of artificial intelligence, neurotechnology, and synthetic media. The conclusions indicate that new technologies have radically shortened the time required to implement individual stages of diversion and increased their effectiveness, leading to the phenomenon of "truth decay" and creating a fundamental threat to social cohesion and the stability of democratic states. The article concludes with recommendations for multi-level defensive actions and an assessment of the probability of each scenario's realisation.
